
When Ann Druyan’s heartbeat was recorded for the Voyager Golden Record, she had just fallen in love with Carl Sagan, meaning a private human moment has now travelled farther than any relationship in history
On June 3, 1977, Ann Druyan sat still while medical sensors recorded the electrical activity of her heart, brain, eyes and muscles. She was making a physiological portrait for the Voyager Golden Record, the message from Earth that would soon leave aboard two spacecraft. Two days earlier, she and Carl Sagan had told each other they were in love.
Druyan spent the recording session thinking deliberately. She moved through the history of Earth, the evolution of life and the rise of human civilization. Then she thought about love and about Sagan. Her body’s signals were converted into sound and compressed into roughly a minute on the record.
The emotional history is real, but it needs one scientific qualification. The recording is not a decipherable copy of Druyan’s thoughts. It is a set of physiological measurements. We know what that minute meant because Druyan later supplied the story.
Two days between the phone call and the electrodes
Druyan was the Golden Record project’s creative director. Sagan, an astronomer at Cornell University, was its executive director. In early June, the team was racing to finish the disc before the Voyager launches later that summer.
In a first-person account given to Radiolab, Druyan recalled searching for a Chinese composition the team wanted to include. When she found a suitable recording, she telephoned Sagan. He returned the call, and their conversation moved far beyond the music. They declared their love and decided to marry, although they had never kissed or even had a personal conversation of that kind before.
The call took place on June 1. The physiological recording was scheduled for June 3. That tight sequence is central to the story: the session had already been planned, but Druyan entered it with an emotional life that had changed in the previous 48 hours.
She and Sagan married in 1981 and remained together until his death in December 1996. The relationship did not begin because of the Golden Record, but it emerged inside the intense collaboration required to build it.
What “Ann’s heartbeat” actually contains
The familiar shorthand makes the recording sound simpler than it was. In a later Science Friday interview, Druyan described an hour-long session that captured an electrocardiogram, or EKG, along with an electroencephalogram, or EEG, eye movement and other bodily signals. Those measurements were transformed into audio and greatly compressed for the disc.
An EKG measures voltage changes associated with the heart’s electrical cycle. That can produce the recognizable rhythm listeners associate with a heartbeat. An EEG measures fluctuating electrical activity at the scalp, where the signals reflect the combined behavior of large populations of neurons. Eye and muscle sensors add further changing patterns.
None of those instruments writes down a person’s thoughts. An EEG can reveal rhythms and broad states, but it does not contain a linguistic transcript of what someone is thinking. There is no decoding key on the Golden Record that turns Druyan’s brain activity back into her thoughts about evolution, history or Sagan.
Druyan has sometimes imagined that a sufficiently capable future listener might extract more from the signals than people can today. That is a speculation, not an established property of the recording. The scientifically defensible claim is narrower: the disc carries physical traces produced by her body while she was having those thoughts. The thoughts themselves survive through her testimony.
The record was larger than one love story
The Golden Record was designed as a compact introduction to Earth. NASA’s catalogue of its contents describes spoken greetings, music from different traditions, natural sounds, human activity and encoded images. The physiological recording appears within a sequence of sounds that also includes footsteps, laughter and a mother with a child.
It was also a collective work. NASA credits Sagan as executive director, Frank Drake as technical director, Druyan as creative director, Timothy Ferris as producer, Jon Lomberg as designer and Linda Salzman Sagan as the organizer of the greetings. Hundreds of voices, performers, photographers, scientists and rights holders contributed to the final object.
That matters because the romance can otherwise take over the history. Druyan’s emotional state gives one passage an extraordinary private context, but the record was not a personal message from a couple. It was an attempt by a small American team, working within the limits and assumptions of 1977, to assemble a portrait of a whole planet.
The physical object is a 12-inch, gold-plated copper phonograph record. NASA’s history of the project explains that each copy was mounted in a protective aluminum jacket with a cartridge and stylus. Diagrams on the cover show how the disc should be played and how its image information should be reconstructed. A sample of uranium-238 provides a radioactive clock that could, in principle, help a finder estimate how long the record had traveled.
The same private context is traveling on two spacecraft
There is not one Golden Record in space but two. Voyager 2 launched on August 20, 1977, and Voyager 1 followed on September 5. Both carry identical copies, and both have crossed the heliopause, the boundary beyond which the solar wind no longer dominates the surrounding plasma.
Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object. Its record has therefore carried Druyan’s heartbeat and other physiological signals farther from Earth than any other known personal biological recording. Voyager 2 carries the second copy on a different path through interstellar space.
The records are not broadcasting as they travel. No heartbeat is pulsing through space, and the spacecraft are not aimed at a particular inhabited world. The audio remains physically encoded in the grooves unless some future finder retrieves a disc, understands the cover instructions and plays it.
This is why the title’s final phrase is best understood as metaphor. A relationship has no measurable distance, so “farther than any relationship in history” is not a scientific ranking. The more literal point is strong enough: no other known human-made object has carried a recording of such an intimate biological moment farther than Voyager 1 has.
A public message with a private layer
The physiological recording was always intended for an interstellar archive, so the signal itself was not private. What was private in June 1977 was its emotional context. A prospective listener could encounter a set of pulses and oscillations without knowing that the person who produced them had just reached a turning point in her life.
Druyan’s later account adds that missing layer. It changes the minute from a generic specimen of human physiology into a record of one body at one unrepeatable time. Science can describe the sensors, the signal conversion, the spacecraft and the distance. It cannot recover the love from the waveform alone.
The Golden Record was built to say that human beings make music, speak many languages, study nature and wonder whether anyone else is listening. By circumstance, it says something else as well. A species trying to explain itself to the universe included not only measurements of the body, but a story about what one of those bodies meant to the person living inside it.
